How wide should your tie be?

What is the proper width for a tie?

Probably not one of life’s crucial questions, but a couple of minutes on the subject will not count as a complete waste of time. Tie width is historically flexible: wide or narrow in the 1910s, Wider in the 1920st till the 1940s, narrow again in the 1950s and 1960s, narrow again in the early 80s and narrowish in the 2010s. Let’s explore what factors determine the proper width of a gentleman’s tie.

The wide ties at the turn of the 20th century were meant to be worn under a waistcoat, so you would see the knot and a bit of the tie.

By the 1920s, ties were widening out, but nothing compared to what came later.

By the 1940s, ties had reached a good 3 to 4 inches at the blade.

By the 50s, things had quietened down a bit, and stayed that way until the late 60s and into the 70s.

By the 80s, the mod revival was in full swing and tie widths had shrunk again, widening out as the decade progressed.

Widening out again, we can expect to see the width change over the next few years. What do you like? Do you prefer the narrow 1950s or early 1980s or the wide and flamboyant 40s or 70s? Be careful. If you prefer the narrow rat pack style, your jacket lapels and shirt collar will have to be in proportion.

Similarly, if you like the wide, colourful 1970s models, make sure that your collar is fairly long and your lapels appropriately wide. At AskOkey, we recommend a tie width proportionate to the wearer’s chest size, usually resulting in a tie between 8 cm – 11cm or 3.25 Inches – 4.25 inches
