Ricky Jackets

Named after Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz), the Ricky jacket was a staple of 1950s youth wear.

Strictly speaking, a Ricky jacket has contrasting panels (in the picture, pale pink and dark blue). It has a zipper front, elastic waist and a fairly large collar. Made in gabardine (often rayon, which gives a softer fabric with a smoother finish), possibly with flannel contrasting panels, the Ricky jacket was a staple of movies and rockabilly musicians throughout the decade.

Now seldom seen except on western swing players and retro-themed musical events, the Ricky jacket has more or less faded into history. Still, every man ought to have at least one, just for fun. You can still find original pieces, but be prepared to pay for them. Reproductions exist, but sadly are often made of inferior material. AskOkey does not make them, so far, but if demand is sufficient, who knows?
